Abstract
The use of entailment in the novel Matilda written in English by Roald Dahl is discussed in this thesis. The purpose of writing this thesis is to identify the types and meanings of entailment in the utterances of each character in the novel. There are five main characters chosen as the data sources i.e. Matilda, Mr. Wormwood, Mrs. Wormwood, Miss Honey, and Miss Trunchbull. In total, there are 70 utterances containing entailment in the five characters. This thesis was conducted with a qualitative descriptive method with a semantic approach that specifically combining Griffiths (2006) and Murphy’s (2003) theories on entailment. There are three types of entailment according to both theories i.e. one-way entailment, twoway entailment, negative entailment. The results of the analysis showed that the one-way entailment type was found 31 times or 44.2%, two-way entailment 14 times or 20%, and negative entailment 25 times or 35.8%. Compared to another types of entailment, one-way entailment is the most dominantly used of entailment.
