Abstract

This thesis describes the results of a comparative analysis between the novel version of The Hate U Give written by Angie Thomas and the film version directed by George Tillman using the same title. The issue discussed is about the alteration in the adaptation from novel to film, which changes the depiction of racial discrimination, the medium specificity, and the moral message. The objective of this research is to explain that the two works are unique in representing the story. In analyzing novel and adaptation, the writer uses the Adaptation theory by Linda Hutcheon. Using this theory, the writer finds that the author's depiction and the message about racial discrimination are different from the film. The alteration in racial discrimination depiction causes the two mediums to present the issue in different places. Racial discrimination in the film adaptation shows the main issue at the beginning of the story, while The Hate U Give novel shows in the middle of the story. The writer also found that these changes significantly impacted the moral messages received by readers and audiences. The novel uses the main character, Starr Carter, as a moral messenger who is subject to racial discrimination. Besides, the film adaptation makes the youngest character, Sekani Carter, as the result of racial discrimination and hatred.
