Abstract

This research discusses the process of overlapping talk carried out by the Defendant on the Judge’s utterance in law court in Caught in Providence Show Season 1. This research aims to identify the types of overlap then to investigate the performance of overlap carried out by Defendant. In this study, the overlapped utterances is discovered in Caught in Providence Show Season 1. There are about 20 videos to be analyzed in this research. All the utterances of the videos are made by using the transcription symbol on ELAN application. Furthermore, this research uses qualitative methods to analyze the data. This research uses the Gail Jefferson theory (1984) to analyze the types of overlap. There are about 96 data of overlap in this research such as Terminal onset (17 data), Latched onset (44 data), Item targetted onset (15 data), Thrust projecting onset (13 data), and Mid utterance silent fillers onset (7 data). The most used type of overlap is Latched Onset because defendant shows the quick response after the completion of the judge’s utterance in the law court of the video. The overlapping talk always occuring on the natural conversation. The function of the overlapping talk is to show the clarification of the problem by the recipient on the curent speaker’s utterance. The defendant tend to shows his/her quick response to clarify about the violation on the judge in lawcourt. The defendant clarifies him/her self on the violation so that the defendant tries to avoid the forfeit.
