Abstract

Medical students especially first-year students, consider anatomy as a difficult lesson allowing required an interesting method in studying the anatomy. One of the methods often applied in learning anatomy is Peer Assisted Learning (PAL). The study aims to explore student perceptions about the effectiveness of Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) in anatomy practicum at the Faculty of Medicine of Andalas University. This is a qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. The research participants were students of medical study program year 2019 at FK Unand who joined PAL activity as a tutee. Sample was 8 participants chosen by using purposive sampling technique. Data was collected by semi-structured interview. All participants have to sign an informed consent form. The findings describe three themes of student perception on the PAL method: (1) benefits in term of planning, self learning, responsibility, collaboration, communication, knowledge, understanding, time, learning environtment, and confident, (2) the obstacle to effectiveness in term of communication tutor, trust tutee, number of tutors, readliness of tutee, and tutor teaching skills, (3) lecturer’s of role. Student had positive perception on the PAL’s method in anatomy practicum so that PAL could be considered as one important teaching and learning strategy within the currriculum of FK Unand to improve the process of teaching and learning anatomy.
