Abstract

This study discusses the used of multimodal elements in linguistic landscape of Bakery shop signboard in Padang. The purpose of this study is to identify the elements found in the signboard and how it works in meaning making. The theory used in this research are refer to Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) work on the grammar of visual design to analyze what and how the multimodal elements strengthen each other’s meaning of the selected Bakery shops signage. The method used in this research is field observation and documentation. The data was collected from 20 bakery shop signboard in several place in Padang. From this research, there are three types of modes elements that became the focus of the data analysis, namely linguistic mode, visual mode, and spatial mode. Linguistic mode can be seen as the shop’s name and the detailed information about the product, also in the slogan or tagline in the signboard. Then the visual elements are including the colors and the logos of the shop. Last, there is a spatial mode which analyzes the placement of the text on the signboard. Based on 20 data collected of Bakery shop signboard that had been analyses by the researcher, the most Visual elements by Bakery shop signage are Emblem. The researcher found 16 data of Emblem, 6 data of Display, and 0 data of Lead. Keywords: Multimodal, Linguistic Landscape (LL), Signboard/Signage
