Abstract
This study aims to compare two works in different mediums: a novel titled Shutter Island authored by Dennis Lehane in 2003 and its movie adaptation with the same title was directed by Martin Scorsese in 2010. This study aims to find out how Martin Scorsese changes intrinsic elements, such as plot, in adapting to a new medium. And how these changes reconstruct the theme. This study employs the adaptation theory proposed by Linda Hutcheon, focusing on the ‘What?’ form. Such as what is maintained, changed, and transformed in the process of adaptation. Qualitative analysis and library research are used as research methods in this study. The hypothesis of this study is supported by the novel itself and the scenes in the movie. The results of the study reveal that Scorsese retained important points such as the plot and theme. However, Scorsese altered the way it was represented by omitting, modifying, and adding to the plot. The plot alterations also affect how the themes are represented. Major themes such as reality and illusion, trauma, and identity are constructed in a deterministic and stable. Meanwhile, the movie reconstructs these themes to be more reflective, emotional, and dramatic.
