Abstract

The use of Little Baby Handbook (LBH) has been implemented in several regions in Indonesia. Its because the existing Maternal Child Handbook (MCH) has not been able to accommodate the needs of mothers and families as guideline in caring for babies, especially for small babies. This study aims to determine the differences in knowledge, perceptions and actions of mothers who have small babies regarding baby care in areas that use and do not use LBH. This was a cross-sectional comparative study in Tanjung Paku Health Center Work Area, Solok City as group that uses LBH and Pariaman Health Center Work Area, Pariaman City as group that does not use LBH. This study was conducted in September - October 2024. The samples was 46 each group and 92 mothers in total selected through simple random sampling. Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney test. The results revealed median total score knowledge, perceptions and actions of mothers who use LBH respectively were 14, 18 and 9 higher than those who do not use LBH 12, 17 and 8. There were differences in knowledge, perceptions and actions of mothers who have small babies regarding baby care in areas that use and do not use LBH (p <0.05). In conclusion, there are differences in knowledge, perceptions and actions of mothers who have small babies regarding baby care in areas that use and do not use LBH. Its necessary to strengthen policies and socialization regarding the importance of using LBH, especially in areas with high premature births.
