Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of conceptual metaphors and find out how conceptual metaphors are implemented in eight selected songs of Sia from the album 1000 Forms of Fear. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) by Lakoff and Johnson as the leading theory for data analysis. Data are analyzed through the process of identifying conceptual metaphors, classifying conceptual metaphor types (structural, ontological, orientational), mapping domains between source domains and target domains, and interpreting the meaning. The data is 76 lyrics from eight songs from the album. The results of the study showed seventy-nine occurrences of conceptual metaphors out of a total of forty-seven domain mappings that conveyed emotions, personal struggles, and human relations. Structural metaphors appear fifty-seven times, ontological metaphors twenty times, and orientational metaphors twice. The study's results also showed the songs Chandelier, Big Girls Cry, Eye of the Needle, Straight for the Knife, and Cellophane had different conceptual metaphorical domain mapping of each lyric. In contrast, the songs Hostage, Elastic Heart, and Fire Meet Gasoline had one main domain mapping that dominated the entire narrative of the song.
