Abstract

Adaptation is not only a matter of reproducing scene by scene everything written from a literary work; adaptation can also be about addition, changes made from the written work into a visualization made by adapters to convey some value to the audience. This thesis aims to compare the novel written by Casey McQuiston titled Red White & Royal Blue, published in 2019, and its film adaptation by Matthew Lopez, aired in 2023. The objective of this research is to compare both mediums, to point out if there are any differences, and reveal how they contribute to the interpretation of the adaptation. This research is conducted by the use of the adaptation theory proposed by Linda Hutcheon. The research is managed by applying the qualitative method and library research as the study method. The hypothesis of this study is supported by the novel itself, the scenes in the film, and its script. The movie centers around the romance between the first son of the United States and the Prince of Wales. This research will aim to discuss both the novel and the film adaptation on how they can relate to their audience. Ultimately, the researcher explores how this movie adaptation goes beyond stereotypes.
