Abstract

This research discusses self-esteem as portrayed in Matt Haig's novel The Midnight Library. It is described by Haig through the main character of this novel. This research is using the theory hierarchy of needs by Maslow H. Abrams, and this research uses a qualitative method with the results presented using the descriptive method. After analyzing the novel The Midnight Library, the writer found that Haig described Nora Seed's self-esteem as changing from the beginning to the end of the story. He describes Nora's low self-esteem at the beginning of the story and describes the changes in Nora's self-esteem to be high at the end of the story, besides that Haig also explains indirectly, that social interaction can affect individual self-esteem as experienced by Nora in this novel.
