Abstract
Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters is the second book of Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan whose story has been widely known as the bridge that connects Greek Mythology with modern world. This research uses this novel to discover women empowerment issue within the novel through one of the characters, Clarisse La Rue. Despite Clarisse La Rue’s fearless and resilient personality, the writer finds that Clarisse La Rue still struggles to fully empower herself. As the findings of this research, the writer discovers few obstacles that holding Clarisse La Rue from empowering herself, namely her fellow Demigods, the Oracle and the expectations from her father. Throughout her Golden Fleece quest journey, Clarisse La rue learns to face those obstacles by embracing her vulnerability that leads to her character development. Character development as part of the findings shows Clarisse La Rue transformation from a stubbornly independent bully who lives up her father’s expectation to a self-aware hero. All that happens because she learns to embrace her own vulnerability by accepting help and acknowledging teamwork. The women empowerment theory by Betty Friedan is applied by the writer of this thesis to analyse Clarisse La Rue empowerment issue and character development. This research is conducted with qualitative method along with library research and this thesis will be presented using descriptive method.
