Abstract
This comparative analysis investigates the use of metaphors as a stylistic device in songs by Jamie Scott and Tom Fletcher, examining their solo work and collaborative contributions to One Direction songs. Through qualitative analysis, this study categorizes metaphors into three types: ontological, structural, and orientational metaphors, which reveal patterns in creative expression and linguistic preference. This study examines the differences in the writing styles of solo and collaborative works by One Direction songwriters Jamie Scott and Tom Fletcher and explores the stylistic goals underlying both solo compositions and collaborative efforts. The research findings show that out of 26 metaphors identified, ontological metaphors constitute 50% of the total occurrences; in solo songwriting, structural metaphors account for 30.7%, and orientational metaphors account for 19.2% of 26 data points. In contrast, structural metaphors constitute 23% of collaborative songwriters, while orientational metaphors comprise 26.9% of the same dataset. Indicating a tendency towards more concrete and experiential metaphorical expressions. This predominance of ontological metaphors indicates a stylistic preference for making abstract concepts more tangible and comprehensible to listeners. This analysis reveals insights into the songwriters’ individual and collaborative creative processes, highlighting how their metaphorical choices reflect their artistic expression and frequent language choices. The simplicity and accessibility of the metaphorical devices in the solo and collaborative works demonstrate the songwriters’ attempts to showcase creativity with their language and provide broad audience appeal.
