Abstract

This thesis analyses black women's experience of segregation and the importance ABSTRACT of sisterhood in self discovery as reflected in The Color Purple novel by Alice Walker and The Help novel by Kathryn Stockett. This is portrayed by the authors through the characters of black women in the novels. This research uses the theory of feminist literary criticism by bell hooks. This research uses a qualitative method, and the results are presented using the description method. I argue that Alice Walker and Kathryn Stockett portray the experiences of segregation as a brutal and destructive system. They show the differences and similarities in the experiences of segregation experienced by black women. Alice Walker portrayal of segregation and discrimination is more complex as Walker shows the psychological impact experienced by the main characters in their daily lives. The authors also show the incredible strength of black women in dealing with it. Both novels demonstrate that sisterhood is a source of strength and empowerment in the face of discrimination and injustice for black women in both novels and the importance of sisterhood as a survival mechanism, a source of strength, and a catalyst for personal and social change. Through the novels The Color Purple and The Help, these authors not only depict suffering, but also celebrate the resilience, creativity, and strength of black women in the face of overwhelming adversity. The authors also display the difference in how an author's background affects the way they express her experiences and viewpoints in their works. Based on her personal experiences and history, Alice Walker provides an in-depth portrayal of black women. In her attempts to give voice to black characters, Kathryn Stockett, while attempting to give voice to black characters, often faces criticism about the accuracy and sensitivity in the portrayal of their experiences.
