Abstract

This thesis analyzes how to raise environmental awareness to children from an early age through children’s books so that they can appreciate and love nature. This research mainly investigates the issue of environmental damage in children's literature. The discussion is related to the way the authors portray nature in their works and how the authors engage children as their readers to have environmental awareness. The data were analyzed using qualitative methods, and the results were presented using descriptive methods. The primary data are The Lorax by Dr. Seuss (1971), The Curious Garden by Peter Brown (2009), and Adventures with Finn and Skip: Forest by Brendan Kearney (2022). Meanwhile, the secondary data are books, articles, movies, and other sources related to the research topic. This research used mimetic theory as a theoretical framework. Apart from mimetic theory, ecocriticism is used to examine the interconnection between humans and the natural world and the environmental awareness of the main characters portrayed in the literary work. Given the various theoretical frameworks within the field of ecocriticism, the writer chose to apply Aldo Leopold's land ethics perspective. From the analysis, the researcher found three environmental damages that occurred in the three works, namely deforestation, air pollution, and water pollution. The researcher also found three forms of environmental awareness shown by the characters in the three works, that is, the character's attitude towards nature, respect and care for animals, and nature protection awareness. In addition, the researcher also found that The Lorax, The Curious Garden, and Adventures with Finn and Skip: Forest show the mutual relationship between humans and nature. The three literary works show that when humans do good to nature, nature will respond positively. On the other hand, if the bad intentions of humans damage nature, it will damage both nature and humans. As a result, human actions determine the good and bad of nature.
