Abstract
In this thesis, the researcher discusses politeness strategies men and women use on America's Got Talent Instagram comments. This study aims to identify politeness strategies used by men and women when leaving comments and what factors influence the selection of politeness strategies used by men and women. Data were taken from the America's Got Talent Instagram account comment page with the username @agt using random sampling and observation methods and then analyzed using Brown and Levinson's theory. The results of the analysis are displayed in the form of screenshots and explained in sentences and tables. There were 70 comments containing politeness strategies, namely positive politeness, negative politeness, bald-on-record, and off-record. The results of this thesis show that the positive politeness strategies are the most widely used politeness strategies, especially for women. This is due to the politeness strategy is used to maintain feelings and show support for the contestants, in which it was found that women leave more comments using feelings. Whereas the factor that influences the choice of the politeness strategy most commonly used by men and women is the payoff factor because the speaker tries to avoid any negative impressions to the listener.
