Abstract

In American literature, violence plays a significant role in exploring various themes, such as social injustice, individual trauma, and the critique of societal norms and structures. Through the depiction of violence, American writers express the complexity of the human experience and invite readers to consider the profound impact of violence and its individuals and society. This research aims to analyze social violence in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic American novel, The Scarlet Letter. The study discusses the issue of social violence during the Puritan era, using Alan Swingewood’s sociology of literature theory. The data collection method employed is library research, and the analysis is presented using a qualitative approach. The result of this research is The Scarlet Letter was inspired by the historical context of the Puritan era. The study also identifies the types of social violence depicted in the novel, reflects on how the novel portrays social violence as a mirror of real life in the Puritan era and examines how the social conditions of that time are reflected in The Scarlet Letter.
