Abstract
This thesis explores the characterization of Robin Hood adaptation in the film "Robin Hood" (2018) directed by Otto Bathurst in comparison to the novel The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle. By applying Linda Hutcheon's adaptation theory, this research focuses on Robin Hood's characterization. This research is a descriptive qualitative with library research method. The research results show that Otto Bathurst presented Robin Hood with a more mature and charismatic appearance, added selfless and mature traits in his personality, upgraded background from a commoner to a nobleman, and shown the motives of action through death and rebellion. The changes from the appearance to motives of action that occur in the adaptation of Robin Hood’s characterization show that Bathurst as a director tried to create a modern version of Robin Hood and aimed the film at an adult audience.
