Abstract
This thesis examines the irony in family and community in Colm Tóibín novel Brooklyn. The writer employs New Criticism to examine the novel's intrinsic elements (characters, plot, setting, point of view, and theme) that use irony to present the issue in family and community (the content of the story), resulting in a comprehensive unity known as "organic unity" in the novel. This study concludes that the novel's intrinsic elements contain irony, highlighting the role of family and community. This indicates that the novel's "organic unity" is formed by formal elements and content.
