Abstract

ABSTRACT The Indonesian Ministry of Health explains that the incidence of anemia among female adolescents continues to increase, caused by iron deficiency. Menstrual cycle disorders, insufficient iron intake, low socio-economic status, poor nutritional status, and poor eating habits are the main factors causing iron deficiency in female adolescents. This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between characteristics and eating habits with the incidence of anemia among female adolescents at SMA N 1 Rao in the working area of Puskesmas Rao. This research uses a quantitative method with a descriptive-analytic approach. The research design is a cross-sectional design. The population in the study consisted of 615 female students from SMA N 1 Rao in 2024. The sample was determined using Proportional Stratified Random Sampling technique, with the sample size calculated using the Slovin formula, resulting in 242 female students as the sample. The instruments used were a questionnaire to measure characteristics and eating habits and an Easy Touch Hemocue to measure anemia. Data were processed using SPSS software with the chi-square statistical technique. The results showed that 33.1% of respondents were 17 years old, 95.9% consumed iron irregularly, 80.6% had regular menstrual cycles, 55.8% had eating habits categorized as sufficient, and 88.8% were not anemic. The statistical test results indicated no relationship between iron consumption and anemia (p-value 0.309>0.05), and menstrual cycle and anemia (p-value 0.895>0.05), but there was a relationship between eating habits and the incidence of anemia (p-value 0.00<0.05). It is recommended that adolescents maintain a healthy diet rich in iron to avoid anemia.
