Abstract

Metaphor is one of the figurative languages commonly used by singers in producing their songs to beautify the meaning. This investigation aims to seek the types of metaphors and the functions of metaphors in six selected songs of Taylor Swift. The theory used by Ullman (2004) for finding types of metaphors, and Leech (1982) for finding functions of metaphors. The method applied in this investigation is descriptive qualitative, which consists of three steps: collecting data, data analysis, and methods of presenting the results of data analysis. Non-participant techniques and note-taking techniques were applied when collecting the data. The data are song lyrics from six selected songs: You Need to Calm Down, Shake it Off, Anti-Hero, and 22, The Man, The Archer. I found three data for anthropomorphic metaphors, one datum for animal metaphors, twenty-nine for concrete to abstract, and two for synesthetic metaphors. Meanwhile, those selected songs have thirty-one data for informational functions, three expressive functions, and one directive functions. The result of this investigation show that Taylor Swift seems to campaign her listeners about promoting acceptance, self- confidence, positivity, and securing ourselves first.
