Abstract

This study aims to compare two works in different mediums: a novel titledLittleWomen authored by Louisa May Alcott in 1868 and its filmadaptation of thesame title was directed by Greta Gerwig in 2019. This study seeks to discover how Greta Gerwig transformed gender roles and femininity in Little Women’snovel into a film version. This study employs the fidelity theory offered by James M. Welsh and the adaptation theory proposed by Linda Hutcheon. Qualitativeanalysis and library research are used as research methods in this study. Theresults revealed that the gender roles in the film adaptation have been portrayedwith some changes, transitioning from the novel to a more dramatic and romanticportrayal. The writer argues that femininity in the novel is depicted differentlyinthe film that reflecting a more modern sense of femininity.
