Abstract

This research discusses about analyzing utterances that use impoliteness strategies in Interstellar (2014) movie. This research aims to find utterances that contain impoliteness strategies and also the sub-strategies. The data used in this research is only in the form of argumentation. The data was collected through observation and analyzed using Culpeper (1996) theory. Based on the result of the research, there were 15 utterances used in the movie containing impoliteness strategies and seven utterances containing impoliteness sub-strategies. The most used impoliteness strategy is bald on record impoliteness with five appearances (33%). The second most used strategy is negative impoliteness with four appearances (27%). Positive impoliteness and sarcasm or mock politeness with three appearances for each (both 20%). Based on Culpeper (1996) theory, there are 2 impoliteness strategies that have sub-strategies, negative impoliteness and positive impoliteness. The results show that negative sub-strategies occur more often in the movie with four appearances. The sub-strategies are frighten which occurred twice, explicitly associate the other with a negative aspect and condescend, scorn or ridicule both was occurred once in the movie. Bald on record occurs more often than other strategies because when the argument between characters happens, it is mostly in an urgent situation where they have to convey a message directly. Next, the writer found three appearances for positive impoliteness sub-strategies. The sub-strategies are be disinterested, unconcerned, unsympathetic, disassociate from the other and calls the other name. The three sub-strategies appear only once in the movie.
