Abstract

ABSTRAK Skripsi ini mengungkapkan ironi dalam menemukan kebahagiaan seperti yang tergambar dalam novel karya Eleanor Hodgeman Porter berjudul Pollyanna. Dalam hal ini, Penulis menggunakan pendekatan New Criticism untuk menemukan bagaimana elemen-elemen fiksi (seperti karakter, setting, plot, sudut pandang simbol, tema, ambiguitas, paradok, ironi dan ketegangan) mendukung konten (pentingnya melakukan usaha demi menemukan kebahagiaan dalam hidup) dari novel ini. Selain itu, skripsi ini juga menjelaskan bagaimana elemen-elemen tersebut mendukung terbentuknya “organic unity” dalam novel ini. Setelah menganalisis novel ini, disimpulkan bahwa semua elemen fiksi yang tersebut diatas sangat mendukung konten cerita tentang pentingnya melakukan usaha-usaha untuk menggapai kebahagiaan dalam hidup. Artinya, elemen formal dan konten dalam novel ini membentuk kesatuan organik yang kuat. Kata Kunci: Kebahagiaan, New Critical, Formal Elements, Organic Unity ABSTRACT This thesis presents the irony of finding happiness in Eleanor Hodgeman Porter’s novel entitled Pollyanna. In analyzing this novel, the writer uses New Critical approach to find how elements of fiction ( like characters, setting, plot, point of view, symbol, theme, ambiguity, paradox, irony and tension) support the content of the novel which is the importance of making effort in seeking happiness. Moreover, this thesis also explain how those elements form an organic unity within the novel. After analyzing the novel, it is concluded that all of the elements mentioned above, are support the content of the story (making effort in searching happiness). It means that formal elements and the content of the story build a strong organic unity. Key terms : Happiness, New Critical, Formal Elements, Organic Unity
