Abstract

ABSTRACT This research discusses the strategy of impoliteness in Joker movie. The impoliteness is spoken by the main character in this Joker movie, Arthur. Other conversations that apply impoliteness strategies are also spoken by supporting characters in this Joker movie. The purpose of this study is to find out the impoliteness strategies used by Arthur and other supporting characters in the Joker movie. This movie is analyzed using Jonathan Culpuper's theory of impoliteness (1996) then the factor theory formulated by Brown and Levinson (1987). The analysis is done by identifying sentence by sentence in each conversation that applies the theory of impoliteness. So that the data obtained is categorized according to the function of impoliteness. The results found four out of six types of impoliteness strategies found in Joker movie, namely (1) Bald on Record impoliteness (2) positive impoliteness (3) negative impoliteness (4) sarcasm/mock impoliteness. Meanwhile, (5) withholding impoliteness was not found in this study. In this study, there were 32 data of impoliteness utterances spoken by Arthur and other supporting characters. Based on the results, Bald on record Impoliteness is the most dominant type of impoliteness used by Arthur and other supporting characters. Keywords: Impoliteness, face, politeness, impoliteness.
