Abstract

The patient's self-efficacy towards adherence to self-care management of diabetes mellitus which is not good causes the patient's HbA1c level to be out of control. HbA1c levels that are continuously uncontrolled can increase the risk of complications from diabetes mellitus, thereby reducing quality of life. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-efficacy and self-care and HbA1c levels, and the relationship between self-care and HbA1c levels in patients with diabetes mellitus in the working area of the Padang Pariaman District Health Center. This study used a cross sectional design. The sample in this study were 92 respondents. The instruments used in this study were General self-efficacy (GSE), The Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities Measure (SDSCA) instruments, and laboratory tests for HbA1c levels. Data were analyzed using the Spearman correlation test. The results showed that there was a relationship between self-efficacy and self-care and HbA1c with a value of ρ=0.013 and ρ=0.000 (ρ<0.05). There is a relationship between self care and HbA1c with a value of ρ=0.050 (ρ<0.05). It is suggested that nurses can educate and advocate for people with diabetes mellitus, the importance of self-management of diabetes so that blood sugar and HbA1c levels are better controlled.
