Abstract

The aging process that occurs in the elderly causes various problems due to physiological changes, one of which is cognitive function damage. In the elderly with impaired cognitive function there are often problems in carrying out Activity Daily Living (ADL), this is related to the lack of family support so that it affects the independence of the elderly in carrying out Activity Daily Living (ADL). This study aims to determine the relationship between family support and independence in carrying out Activity Daily Living (ADL) in elderly with cognitive function disorders in the working area of the Andalas Health Center. This type of research quantitative with a cross sectional design. The sample 368 elderly with cognitive function disorder, with the sampling technique that is probability sampling. The independent variable is family support and the dependent variable is ADL independence. The questionnaire used, the Family Support Scale (FFS) and the Barthel Index. Data were analyzed by Chi-Square test. The results showed a significant relationship between family support and independence in carrying out Activity Daily Living (ADL) in the elderly with cognitive function disorders in the Andalas Health Center work area (p=<0.001). It is hoped that health workers at the Andalas Health Center can make persuasive and educational efforts involving families in supporting family center care-based elderly care as one of the strategies to increase the independence of the elderly with cognitive function disorders in performing ADL
