Abstract

In this research, the writer discusses and analyses the thematic structures, theme, and rheme in the short story The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant. The data taken for analysis was collected using the method proposed by Halliday Matthiessen (2004). The method applied in this research is qualitative as the theme types were counted and the frequency percentages of each theme type were estimated and then write the conclusions. This research aims to analyze the thematic structures in The Necklace short story. Furthermore, this study aims to discuss the frequency of the dominant type of theme that was usually used in the text. As a result of this research, the writer found 436 themes of 334 total clauses. There are three types of themes, the first theme is the topical theme, this type of theme is divided into three: participant (88.02%), circumstance (8.68%), and process (3.29%). Then the second theme is the textual theme: structural conjunction (79.77%), continuative (15.73%), and conjunctive adjunct (4.49%). The last theme is the interpersonal theme: finite (53.84%), vocative 7.69%), and modal adjunct (38.46%). This research found that the dominant type of theme in the short story The Necklace is the topical theme as much as 334 times (76.60%) of the total themes. This theme is dominant because the clause generally starts from the subject and the subject is from the participant (a part of the topical theme). Then the lowest type is the interpersonal theme (2.98%) of the total theme in the clause of The Necklace short story.
