Abstract
This study discusses Colonialism in Africa in Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. This research aims to get results from readers' responses from English students at Andalas University, regarding the Colonialism in the novella Heart of Darkness. The author uses a reader's response approach using David Bleich's theory and applies the postcolonial theory of literary criticism from Edward Said. The author uses data collection methods by giving questionnaires to local officials and using library research methods in collecting data. The author also uses thematic analysis, which identifies, analyzes, and interprets patterns from the data collected from the respondents. This research reveals that everyone has their own opinion and broad view of colonialism. In the response given by the readers of the Heart of Darkness story, the results show that the readers are against colonialism, and they judge this work as a work that can describe colonialism.
