Abstract

In this research, politeness strategies in making requests in Crazy Rich Asians movie are examined. The research focuses on the utterance that contains politeness in requesting that is uttered by the whole characters in Crazy Rich Asians movie. The research aims to investigate the types of request that is used to implement politeness in requesting, explain the types of politeness strategies in making requests, and identify the factor that influences the choice of certain strategy in Crazy Rich Asians movie. In this research, non-participant observation method is used to collect the data. The data of this research is analyzed by using Tsui’s classification of request (1994) and politeness strategies approached by Brown and Levinson (1987). The writer found 67 utterances that contain politeness in making requests that are uttered by the whole character in Crazy Rich Asians movie. The result of the analysis shows that there are five types of request expressions used by the characters to utter politeness in Crazy Rich Asians movie; request for action, request for permission, offer, invitation, and proposal. Request for action becomes the most dominant type used by the character in Crazy Rich Asians movie because as a speaker, the character wants the interlocutor to do something for his or her benefit. Then, there are four politeness strategies in requesting used in Crazy Rich Asians movie; bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record. Positive politeness is mostly employed by the character to minimize the imposition of the request. Afterward, there are three factors that influence the choice of a certain strategy; social distance, relative power, and absolute ranking of imposition. The most influential factor that influences the character to choose a politeness strategy in requesting is social distance. The choice of a positive politeness strategy is influenced by a close relationship. Positive politeness strategy is also used if the character wants to minimize the distance with the interlocutor.
