Abstract

Background : Thalassemia is one of the most common genetic diseases in the world which is characterized by the absence or reduction one of globin chains. Thalassemia causes hemolysis with clinical manifestasion anemia and requires repeated blood transfusions. Excessive build-up of iron in the body (hemosiderosis) due to repeated blood transfusions is suspected to be the one of the causes of growth and quality of life disorders in thalassemic children. Objective: This study aims to know about growth and quality of life in children with thalassemia at Dr. M. Djamil Padang Hospital Method : This study was analytical observational study with cross-sectional approach. The population is pediatric patients with thalassemia aged 2-18 years at M. Djamil Hospital Padang in 2021-2022. Data collection is carried out by interviews, fill out questionnaire and secondary data collection from the medical record. Result: Short stature was found in 27 children (79,4%). Radiological evaluation found 18 children with delayed/retarded bone age (52,9%). Almost of children with eutiroid (91,2%) and 3 children with subclinical hypothyroidism (8,8%). In quality of life, disturbances were found in the physical aspects 58,8%, the emotional aspects 38,2%, the social aspects 55,9% and the school aspects 85,3%. Conclusion: Almost of children with short stature and delayed/retarded bone age. The physical aspects is the most disturbed quality of life. There was statistically meaningful relationship between serum ferritin levels and thyroid function.
