Abstract

Emotional stress is a negative influence on one’s feelings, such as anxiety, due to psychological effects of the body in the form of cardiovascular and hormonal changes. Stress can be caused by internal and external factors. The Covid-19 pandemic situation is a new stress factor for first year medical students because they immediately face a transitional period of learning to be online, so they have to get used to the new learning system. The study aimed to determine the risk factors that trigger emotional stress for medical students at Andalas University in the first-year of class 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. The research method is observational analytic using quantitative methods with a cross-sectional research design. The subjects of this study were obtained through systematic random sampling, obtained a minimum sample of 72 people. The research instrument used DASS-42 and Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale for Youth. The result of this study are 74 people (32,9%) suffering from stress, the highest stress level is mild stress (43,2%), followed by moderate stress (36,5%), and severe stress (20,3%). The risk factors for stress sequentially are academic atmosphere (69 people), living environment (52 people), change of habits (46 people), interpersonal relationship (42 people), unexpected events (41 people), and economic factors (28 people). Factors that exacerbate academic stress is death of a family member/other family members/spouse/close friend. The factor that relieves academic stress is vacation. The relationship between stress levels and risk factors is not significant, because the p value>0,05 , so the Spearman Rho correlation test cannot be correlated, therefore the more risk factor items involved in the students’ risk factors, it does not affect the stress level. In conclusion, the academic atmosphere factor is the risk factor for emotional stress for first year medical students of the class of 2020 at Andalas University during the Covid-19 pandemic.
