Abstract

This thesis discusses parenthood and friendship in two children's novels by Roald Dahl entitled Matilda and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. This study aims to explore how these two things presented in works, especially from an intrinsic perspective. This applies New Criticism by Cleanth Brooks. It is found out that irony is the formal elements that is used mostly in the two novels. In Matilda, ironies are presented through the failure of Matilda’s parents to do their role well. They, ironically, teach negative things to their children. Another irony is seen when Matilda is evidently get affection and positive values from non-relatives like teacher and friends. Meanwhile, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory shows the irony in the life of the both main and supporting characters. Children from the upper-class and basically have everything in their life, evidently have no ethic and respect for others. They cannot make friends with other children. Willy Wonka, an adult who has no friend, ironically can make friend with Charlie who is just a simple young boy. From the explanation, it can be concluded that both works optimize the role of irony to convey messages about parenthood and friendship in a child's life. The results of the analysis are presented descriptively.
