Abstract
ABSTRACT Nests built by vertebrates, such as birds, can become place where other invertebrates live. Ants, among other insects, have been known to exist within bird nests, despite the relationships made with the nests owners unclear. This study aimed to do the inventory on ant species (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) that specifically inhabit the bird nests within the Taman Hutan Raya Bung Hatta area, Padang. It had been conducted from June 2021 to January 2022, where the bird nests were purposively collected then followed with ant collection from each nest. As many as 13 bird nests were sampled and identified to belong to birds from Pycnonotidae (1), Cisticolidae (1) and Estrildidae (11); 5 nests showed active breeding indications when collected. A total of 1,361 ant individuals belong to 15 species, 14 genera, 9 tribes, and 5 subfamilies extracted from those nests. Ant species inventory consisted of the members of subfamilies Formicinae (5), Myrmicinae (5), Dolichoderinae (3), Ponerinae (2) and Pseudomyrmicinae (1). The interaction between ants and birds within the bird nests was presumed to be potentially beneficial, commensal or detrimental for any of them. Keywords: ants, ant invasions, bird nests, purposive sampling, species inventory, West Sumatra
