Abstract

Astaxanthin, phenolic and flavonoid contents have strong antioxidant activity that able to defend the body from free radical attact. The aim of this study is to determine total phenolic and flavonoid contents from Spirulina platensis, as well as activity of acetonic extract of Spirulina platensis which contain astaxanthin as antioxidants. The results of identification using Spectrophotometer UV-Vis showed that the concentration astaxanthin from acetonic extract of Spirulina platensis was 6,3 mg/L, total phenolic and flavonoid contents Spirulina platensis were 13,9 mg GAE/g and 10,8 mg QE/g respectively. High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) identification showed that acetonic extract of Spirulina platensis contains astaxanthin and another compounds, and the functional groups detected by Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) indicated that the extract compound was astaxanthin. Antioxidant activity of acetonic extract of Spirulina platensis which contain astaxanthin showed IC50 value about 425 mg/L. thus, from the study that has been done, it was found that the acetonic extract of Spirulina platensis which contain astaxanthin produced very weak antioxidants activity because there are another compounds that inhibit the antioxidants activity of astaxanthin.
