Abstract

The existence of variations of English, Singlish, which is spoken in Singapore, has risen to various perceptions and attitudes of language community towards this variation. This thesis discusses the knowledge and language attitude of people outside the community toward Singlish with a sample of 20 English Department students batch 2017, Faculty of Humanities, Andalas University who have taken Sociolinguistics class. Data were obtained using Direct Approach (Peter Garret, 2010) by distributing questionnares to respondents who had been listened to an audio recording of someone speaking in Singlish. The level of knowledge of Singlish was measured using Likert Scale and attitudes toward Singlish were determined referring to the attitude categorization proposed by Arikunto (2010). The result of the questionnare showed that the level of students’ knowledge of Singlish was quite good (60%). Their knowledge is limited to information on Singlish as a variation of English. Then, students’ attitudes toward Singlish were varied, in which 43.75% had a positive attitude, 36.35% was neutral, and 20% had a negative attitude. These attitude showed that their positive attitude was not in line with their level of knowledge.
