Firstly, the author, Isabel Allende, is one of twentieth century famous female writers in America, particularly in Latin America that is used to be dominated by masculine themes at that time. Allende‘s book The House of the Spirits mentioned as one of the Best 60 Books of the Past 60 Years in The Times (London). She is regarded as one of the great Latin American feminist authors with her works concerned on the feminist issues in Latin American society. There are many of her works that reflect the feminist point of view and women’s struggle such as Of Love and Shadows (1983), Eva Luna (1985), and The Infinite Plan (1991). Secondly, the theme of the novel that tells about women’s desire of getting free from male domination, which shows by the female characters in this novel. The important thing which is make the novel interesting is the struggle shows through three generation female lineage. This novel describes about women who want to get their freedom like men and have their self expression and aspiration in life. In fact, the patriarchal system always put them at the subordinated position in society then limit their space in exploring their ideas. Breaking the habit, they show their struggle to get what they want in their life. This is an interesting novel that shows the women struggle in fighting the tyranny of patriarchy. Thirdly, The House of the Spirits is a novel that reflects the author experiences that fits the requirement of gynocriticism. Those facts are supported by Isabel Allende’s biography which shows that the female character in the novel The House of the Spirits is a part of her own history of life and the history of Chile Based on the reasons above, the writer proposes to conduct a research entitled “Isabel Allende’s Feminist Ideas as Seen in the Female Character in The House of the Spirits”
