Abstract

The novel Brick Lane is classified as minority literature, because it tells about how women in Bengali’s immigrant society are treated. Those who come from Bangladesh societies tend to preserve their tradition, although they do not live in Bangladesh anymore. In Bengali’s culture, for example, women are not allowed to work because it will make negative image of the husband in the family. This practice actually makes women become marginalized. Based on the explanation above, it can be seen that Brick Lane is a novel which has woman as its main character, and this woman main character carries feminist value within her. Because of that, the writer decides to conduct a research on the novel by using Feminist criticism. As Guerin explains, Feminist Criticism is “a kind of feminist movement which analyzes literary works which deals with a woman as a subject” (1999). The writer will focus on analyzing the main female character, Nazneen, by applying Gynocriticism (women as writer). Gynocriticism is a Feminist theory that was proposed by Elaine Showalter. It specifies in evaluating text written by woman in term of the way woman’s image is constructed or framed by women authors. The writer applies Gynocriticism since the writer believes that Monica Ali as a female writer has her own perspectives about woman which she wants to deliver to the reader through the character of Nazneen. Hence, the writer entitles her research “Bengali’s Woman Experience in Facing the Patriarchal Society as seen in Monica Ali’s Brick Lane”.
