Abstract
This research discusses the use of English address terms at American court of law as seen in Caught in Providence TV shows. The aims of this research is to find out the types and functions of English address terms at American court of law as seen in the selected episode of Caught in Providence TV shows. The data in this research were collected by downloading, transcribed the conversation from the video, identified, categorized, and described the address terms found in the conversation from the video. Transcription technique was used in collecting the data. The data were analyzed by using Braun’s theory (1988) for the types of English address terms. Additionally, some online websites are used to identify the formal and informal English address terms. Theory by Brown and Levinson, Brown and Ford are used to identify the function of English address terms. The result shows that there are 40 English address terms found in the selected episode of Caught in Providence Episode 004 Season 006 video. There are also six types of English address terms found in the selected episode. The most dominant address terms that is used by the Judge is name with the total of 20 address terms. Then, the most dominant address terms that is used by the accused in addressing the Judge is abstract nouns with the total of eight address terms. Both of the address terms that is used by the Judge and the accused indicate polite terms used to express respect and politeness to the addressee. Therefore, the function of the address terms that is used by the Judge and the accused in the selected episode is to show their politeness.
