Abstract

A translator may find difficulties in doing translation, since every language has differences in grammatical rules, lexical, culture, figurative senses and idiomatic expressions. One of the difficulties in doing translation is translating idiomatic expression, this leads a translator to find the closed natural equivalence of the idiomatic expression from the source language into target language and translation must be accurate, natural and communicative. Idiomatic expression can be found not only in our daily conversation but also in written material as novels, magazines, books, newspapers and many others. Based on the reason above the writer wants to analyze the translation of idiomatic expression in the novel, that is the idiomatic expression (especially idiomatic adjective and noun phrase) found in Lord Edgware Dies novel by Agatha Christie. The writer chooses this novel as a source of data for the following reasons; first, there are many idioms can be found in the novel, second the author of this novel is a very famous; she is the best-selling novelist in history and most of her novel tells about the crime and detective story. In conducting this writing, the writer will compare English version of Lord Edgware Dies novel with Indonesian version that was translated by Lily Wibisono. In this research, the writer analyzing strategies used in translating idiomatic adjective and noun phrase in Lord Edgware Dies novel from English into Indonesian.
