Abstract

This study presents the analysis of a novel entitled Beneath a Marble Sky by John Shors. This research aims to determine the human motives underlying the sibling rivalry case. Thus, it reveals the contribution of human motives within their psyche concerning their desire to survive in the novel. In analyzing the novel, the writer uses literary Darwinism, especially human motives theory propounded by Joseph Carrol, and Herbert Spencer's survival of the fittest. After analyzing Beneath a Marble Sky, the writer concludes that human motives are the reason why the sibling regards another sibling as an opponent in obtaining limited life resources around them. It is naturally related to their desire for survival. Shors shows how siblings are designed to survive with human motives inside their psyche. The same human motives among the siblings are the reason for their competition. The end of sibling rivalry is when one of the siblings can balance her human motives it can prepare her to survive and save many lives. The other sibling is controlled by his human motives and damages many lives around him. And, another one alienates himself from his human motives in the name of humanity.
