Abstract

Literature usually concerns with human beings and their characters. As the human beings, they are given mind and soul to make them different from others. As Edgar V states: ‘In literature’, a character may be defined as a verbal representation of a human being’ (1999:53). It means that through a literary work an author tries to explore imagination, feeling, aspiration, etc. The author also conveys some messages to the readers within his work. It is why literary work is interesting to study. Some of literary works tends to be influenced by the psychology of the author. Sometimes we do not realize the existence of the influence author’s psychological. Psychology can be used in literary criticism because it can explain the process of creativity and see the changing of literary work, especially to analyze characters. Freud premises the powerful social taboos attached to certain sexual impulses, many of our desires and memories are repressed (Guerin, 1999: 128). It means that psychoanalytic emphasizes individual’s mental process or unconscious mind which is formed by sexual impulses, desires and memories of life. Principal among these is Freud’s assignment of the mental processes to three psychic zones: id, ego and superego. The writer analyzes novel entitled Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire written by Joanna Kathleen Rowling. The writer chooses this novel to be analyzed because it is relevant to psychological approach. Freud explains that psychological interpretation can afford many profound clues toward solving a work’s thematic and symbolic mysteries (Guerin, 1999: 128). In this novel, the psychoanalysis of author reflects to Hermione’s character. J. K. Rowling who is a British creator and author has memories repressed in her life reflected to her novel unconsciously. Rowling’s mother dies because of Multiple Sclerosis when she wrote her novel. She married Portuguese Television Journalist Jorge Arantes, and after a year lived together Rowling decided to separate with her husband. She was being a single parent for her daughter Jessica. After that Rowling joined the One Parent Families and Multiple Sclerosis organization. Her own life unconsciously reflected on Hermione’s character in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. She is a smart girl who has an obsession to always be number one. She tried to always answer the entire teacher questions. As such, no one wants to be her friends. So, Hermione spend a whole time at library and she has a cat being a friend who always accompanied her. In one condition she wants to show herself but in the other she wants to be invisible, as shown shows from her style. The reason why the writer chooses this approach to be analyzed with this novel is because psychological approach in author’s psychology can help us to see the problem of the character in this novel. I choose Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire because I find several psychological reflections in its novel. The writer wants to explore Hermione’s character in J. K. Rowling’s novel. Hence the writer entitled her researchJoanne Kathleen Rowling’s Unconsciousness as Reflected on Hermione’s Character in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
