Abstract

One kinds of the literary work is novel. In conducting this research, the writer uses the novel entitled The Golden Compass written by Philip Pullman. This novel is the first book of His Dark Materials Trilogy. The other two books are The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. The Golden Compass is a story about a girl named Lyra Belacqua as the main character whose journey is to the north in searching her friend Roger who has been kidnapped by Gobblers (General Oblation Board). In her adventure, Lyra passes an amazing adventure in the battle to save her friend and other missing children with her allied, Gyptians, witch and the strong white armored polar bear Iorek Byrnison. Moreover, Lyra then dives into unbelievable danger, adventure, and experience. As a part-time lecture on literature, Pullman wrote children’s books. His books include four novels in the Sally Lockhart series, the three play adaptations, How to be Cool (1987), Frankenstein (1990), Sherlock Holmes and Lime House Horror (1992), and Clockwork (1996). Recently, he has become a well-known for His Dark Materials Trilogy; the books in the trilogy are The Golden Compass (1995) – also known as Northern Light, The Subtle Knife (1997), and The Amber Spyglass (2000). He was awarded a winner of the New English Library’s Young Writer’s Award in 1972 (The Haunted Storm), the winner of the Carnegie Award in 1995 (The Golden Compass), and the winner of the Whitbread Prize in 2002 (The Amber Spyglass). In analyzing novels, genre is the part which categorizes a story and refers the whole story especially on the novel. The author uses the genre of fantasy to support the magical side through the journey. Fantasy is defined as the element of fiction that is not real in the reality. It means that fantasy is the imagination element on the literary work that never happened in the truth world. In A Glossary of Literary Terms by Abrams states that genre is “A term, French in origin that denotes types or classes of literature.” (108). Then, in other word the term of genre can be said classifying as the type of that novel. Furthermore, after reading the novel, the writer found several archetypal images in its content, particularly the archetypal images which are represented by several characters and those reasons make the novel becomes an interesting novel to be analyzed. Hence, the writer wants to investigate those archetypal images in order to understand Lyra Belacqua’s journey fully. Finally, the writer intends to conduct his research by using this novel, and entitles this research “Archetypal Images in Lyra Belacqua’s Journey as seen in Philip Pullman’s The Golden Compass”.
