Abstract

This thesis discusses the issues of two contradicting personalities that the writer refers to as monstrosity and humanity in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The writer aims to reveal the true personality of Frankenstein’s characters of different species, humans and a monster, by finding the work’s organic unity. The writer applies the new criticism theory from Cleanth Brooks’ to analyze how Mary Shelley utilizes the formal elements to convey the organic unity of Frankenstein. The analysis shows that neither human characters nor monster can be claimed to be entirely good or evil. The humans who are touted as the perfect creatures are capable of behaving by relying on their monstrosity, and the monster is capable of behaving by relying on his humanity.
