Abstract
This study examines the phenomenon of Indonesian–English code-mixing on the text-centric social media platform Threads, specifically focusing on its structural types and communicative functions within freelance and remote work communities. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, involving digital field research to collect public posts via purposive sampling. A total of 152 raw posts were gathered during a one-month observation period. From this population, 45 posts (a 30% representative sample) were purposively selected as the primary data to avoid data repetition. Based on Muysken’s (2000) theoretical framework, the study identified 170 instances of code-mixing, revealing that insertion was the most dominant type (87%), followed by alternation (13%), while congruent lexicalization was not found. Furthermore, applying Appel and Muysken's (1987) framework, the analysis found 216 functional occurrences. The referential function was highly prominent (67%), alongside directive (13%), phatic (10%), expressive (9%), and poetic functions (1%). The metalinguistic function was not found. The results show that users mix languages on purpose to communicate more effectively. They borrow English words for specific freelance terms they cannot easily translate. At the same time, they shift to English whenever they want to sound more professional or openly discuss their feelings.
