Abstract

This study aimed at identifying and analyzing the types and factors that influence Caroline’s use of language styles to adapt to her new social environment in 2 Broke Girls series. The writer used Joos’s (1967) language style theory to identify language styles in Caroline’s utterances, and Holmes’s (2013) theory to analyze social factors that influenced her use of language style. This study used a qualitative descriptive method. The results revealed four of Joos’s five language styles: formal (1,6%), consultative (16,9%), casual (79,1%), and intimate (2,4%) out of a total of 124 data. Casual style was the most dominant because her interlocutors were friends and coworkers in her new environment. Her dominant use of casual style helped her establish familiarity and fit in due to the extreme shift in social class from the elite to the working class. Caroline Channing’s language styles were influenced by social factors, namely the participant, the setting, the topic, and the function. Her language choices varied according to her the participant, setting, topic, and communicative function. Therefore, the reason she adjusted her language style is not only to adapt but also to become part of the social environment that she was forced to get into.
