Abstract

The plot is the most important part of a story that organizes the narrative into a unified whole that is interconnected. This study aims to analyze the surprises present in the plot of Agatha Christie's novel "Murder on the Orient Express." The research method used is a qualitative method with a formalist approach. This study uses Sternberg's theory of surprise to analyze the data. The results of this study show that Agatha Christie created two surprises in the novel "Murder on the Orient Express." The first surprise concerns the identity of the victim. Christie creates the first surprise by withholding information during the exposition and conflict stages and revealing the surprise during the complication stage. The second surprise is the identity of the perpetrator. Christie withholds this information from the exposition, conflict, and complication stages and reveals it at the climax stage.
