Abstract

Genre analysis is the study of situated linguistic behaviour in institutionalised academic or professional settings (Bhatia 1997, p. 629). Football News Programs are visual-oriented source of information about the world of football which consists of three programs: The Lowdown, The Transfer Show and Numbers Don’t Lie. This research aims to examine the move structure, communicative purposes and the keywords (using AntConc 4.3.1) of the introduction sections of FNP (Football News Programs). The data consists of 45 videos (15 each program) which is transferred to text that is retrieved from the transcription section from YouTube. This study utilizes a qualitative method to analyze the data by using the genre analysis theory from Bhatia (2013), communicative purposes theory from Swales (1990), and Amoakohene’s (2017) framework to analyze the move structure of the introduction sections FNP. The findings revealed that the introduction sections of FNP are characterized by three moves which are Opening, Outline of Presentation and Advertising. There are also two communicative purposes revealed from the move structure, which are communicative purpose 1: to Provide an engaging opening to the viewers and Communicative Purpose 2: To inform the viewers the order of Football News Programs. There are also 10 keywords identified from the data which are Welcome, League, Lowdown, Premier, Transfer, Chelsea, United, Season, Show, and signing. This research provides the various information towards the genre of sports news specifically covering football which can be valuable for people that are interested on this topic.
