Abstract

This research examines the study of pragmatics on the use of politeness strategies and politeness principles in the novel ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’. This study aims to identify the politeness strategies and types of maxims that are used by characters in the dialogues and lines of the poem written by Kya in the novel. This study uses a qualitative, descriptive-analytical approach with related theory in the scope of a pragmatic framework with Politeness Strategies by Brown and Levinson (1987) and the Principle of Politeness by Leech (1983). The data were analyzed by identifying Politeness Strategies (positive politeness, negative politeness, bald-on- record, and off-record). The data were derived from the total 212 data points identified by the researcher in all of Kya’s utterances as the main character in the novel Where the Crawdads Sing, 86 (approximately 20%) were selected and analyzed, representing each category of politeness strategies and principles. From all the data analyzed, the results found that the negative politeness strategy is the most frequently used, which occurs 83 times (39.15%), and the tact maxim is the most used, occurring 108 times (50.94%). Furthermore, the researcher found and categorized four categories of emotional resilience reflected in Kya’s utterances: Reaching Out, Self-Protection, Emotional Regulation, and Survival. Among these categories, Reaching Out is the most dominant, occurring 93 times (43.87%). This study concludes that politeness in Kya’s utterances is closely related to her psychological condition and plays an important role in her character development, where politeness functions as both a protective mechanism and a means of maintaining social connections.
