Abstract
This study analyzes the translation techniques used in bilingual natural disaster news published by Antara News and identifies the similarities and differences between the source text (Indonesian) and the target text (English) in terms of selected sentential variations and the translation techniques found in the bilingual news on natural disaster reporting by Antara News. This study is important because news translation plays a key role in delivering accurate information to international readers, especially in natural disaster reporting. This research used a qualitative method with descriptive analysis. The data consisted of 39 sentence pairs of the source text and the target texts taken from Antara News articles. The analysis was based on Molina and Albir’s (2002) theory of translation techniques. The findings showed that modulation was the most frequently used technique, followed by reduction, amplification, and established equivalent. In terms of similarities and differences, the findings showed that the article shared similar pattern in selected sentential variations and translation techniques, especially in the used of one ST corresponding to one TT, sentence merging, and sentence splitting. However, differences were identified in sentence quantity, selected sentential variations, and the frequency of translation techniques in each article. Overall, the study indicates that disaster news translation tends to preserve the original meaning while making necessary adjustments to improve clarity and readability in English.
