Abstract

This thesis talks about the level of the accuracy of translating Minang cultural words by George A. Fowler who translate Indonesian novel that has Minangkabau culture as the theme. The novel is created by Marah Rusli with the title Siti Nurbaya (Kasih Tak Sampai) translated into English version Siti Nurbaya (A Love Unrealized). In this thesis, the writer not only discuss about the level of the accuracy of Minang cultural words that have been translate into English, but also discussing about the categories of cultural words. There are several things that the writer identifies in this thesis such as, the Minang cultural words that are found in the novel, the categories of Minang cultural words that are found in the novel, and the level of the accuracy of translating Minang cultural words into English by George A. Fowler. The writer found twenty-seven (27) data, but only Thirteen (13) data have the category of Minang cultural words. Six (6) data classified as accurate, four (4) as less- accurate, and three (3) as not- accurate. The category of cultural words show the result seven (7) data categorized as material culture, five (5) as social culture, and one (1) as organization. In analyzing the data in this thesis the writer uses translation theory and category of cultural words proposed by Newmark (1988), equivalent theory by Roger T. Bell (1991), and translation quality assessment by Larson (1998). The result shows that the translation made by George A. Fowler is less-accurate.
